The other day, I had a bug where some of my SetApp apps config won’t load when I’d restart my Mac. I do use mackup which has had its fair share of issues lately.
But I never could figure out what was going wrong. I was using Dropbox to backup and symlink all my system configurations.
I gave this task to three agents, @Claudeai, @CommandCodeAI, and Gemini, and waited for them to suggest what was wrong.
It was fascinating to see all three coding agents, while took different approaches, turned up very similar answers.
Turns out, the new Dropbox filesystem hasn’t been mounted yet when SetApp and other apps start.
So, every agent pointed out that it’s time to drop dropbox in favor of several different solutions.
This is what I did
⚠️ @Claudeai suggested to use iCloud. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I don’t use that.
✅ @CommandCodeAI knew i don’t use iCloud (`cmd` remembers my taste when it sees me do anything) so it suggested me to use mackup in a copy mode where backup stays in Dropbox, but no symlinks are created.
🤘Gemini suggested i make a script that runs every hour and backs the entire thing up using the solution from Command Code.
All in all, this has been such a weird bug. I had neither the time nor the energy to debug it for maybe over two years now.
Coding agents have agency beyond code. And I’m here for it!
